Профессор Родригес руководит лабораторией, зарегистрированной в Национальном научном фонде Бразилии. Его лаборатория работает по двум основным исследовательским направлениям: одно связано с работой в области Интернета вещей, а второе предполагает работу над следующим поколением сетей и приложений.
  Кроме непосредственно научной работы, Джоэл Родригес ведёт активную просветительскую деятельность и является заслуженным лектором IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc), членом правления этой организации, а также в настоящее время выступает директором по развитию конференций. Автор и соавтор более 550 работ в реферируемых международных журналах. Был награжден несколькими наградами от IEEE Communications Society и несколькими наградами за лучшие работы.
